When the Parole Authority refuses parole, an inmate can be given an automatic review hearing or a can apply to have one.
A review hearing is automatically granted when the Authority requires additional information before a decision can be made, and sets a date to allow time for the inmate in appear in court via AVL and with legal representation.
Where an inmate is required to apply for a review of the parole decision they must submit reasons as to why it is necessary and appropriate.
The Authority then holds a meeting to consider the inmate's application and if approved, sets a date for a review hearing.
If an inmate decides they don't want a review they can reapply for parole the following year on their anniversary date, but only if they have more than 12 months left to serve on their sentence.
