SPA forms an intention to refuse parole for inmate Kieran Loveridge

The State Parole Authority today formed an intention to refuse parole for Kieran Loveridge.

The Authority moved to keep him in prison following a private meeting earlier today.

Loveridge was convicted of the fatal attack on Thomas Kelly in Kings Cross on June 7, 2013.

He is serving an overall sentence of 13 years and 8 months for several offences including the manslaughter of 18-year-old Kelly, who never regained consciousness and died in St Vincent’s Hospital two days after the attack.

The new Chair of the Authority, Geoff Bellew, SC said the panel formed its intention after assessing reports from the Serious Offenders Review Council and Community Corrections, both of which advised against release.

Judge Bellew said the Authority is satisfied releasing Loveridge on parole is not in the interests of community safety.

“Our paramount consideration is always the protection of the community, and the Authority has formed the view that release on parole is not appropriate,” Judge Bellew said. 

Today was the inmate’s first opportunity to be considered for parole.

His non-parole period expires 17 June 2023 with his maximum sentence expiring 17 May 2026.
